Music in Gosport Here in U3A Gosport we are fortunate in having no fewer than seven musical groups – three active and three passive.
The three passive groups are: Fifties & Sixties music led by Geoff Piper who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music of that period and leads talking about and playing music to a large audience. Jazz appreciation led by an experienced jazz musician, Stan Higham, who explains the origins and development of jazz using a variety of audio and visual techniques. Members are invited to play tracks and say something about them. Music appreciation is led by Joan Ferguson who talks about the composer and plays a variety of classical music to a full house. Music appreciation 2 is led by Geoff Piper
The active or playing groups are: The Folk Club is led by John Taylor and meets twice a month to play, mainly, folk music and has a variety of instrumentalists and singers. All are very supportive and everyone has their say in what is played. The Songsters is led by Derry Rose, a keen and enthusiastic singer. The group, mostly ladies, meet twice a month to sing a wide variety of songs both as a group and solo. The Swing Band is led by John Taylor and meets once a week to play a variety of music with the emphasis on music from the swing era. Glen Miller is a favorite but seasonal music is also played, Christmas music, Easter music etc. The Swing Band frequently plays for local groups such as Brenden Care Clubs.
